Bike Commute Challenge 2010 - Winners!
This year 25 businesses registered for the Bike Commute Challenge. During the Challenge 152 participants rode 3,065 miles, prevented the release of 2,835 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, 40 pounds of other air pollutants, 145 gallons of fuel and saved $436.40 on fuel (at $2.99/gallon) all while commuting by bike!
Shasta College Named Bicycle Friendly Employer of the Year by NorCal Bicycle Partnership
The winning Bicycle-Friendly Employer of the Year is Shasta College! Shasta College provides bike racks, inside bike parking, showers, and lockers to their employees, supporting them to commute by bicycle, and has bicycle route maps posted on campus. They had 22 people on their team, riding 74 round trips for a total 758 miles. Second place went to The McConnell Foundation and a very close third to Simpson University. The Independent category was lead by none other than Sundial Pedicab who racked up 85 miles between two employees! Full summary here.
Winning Bicycle Commuters 2010
Participants in the Bike Commute Challenge received a free entry into a drawing each day they commuted by bicycle between May 14 and 21, 2010. The winners are:
- • Gift Certificates to local bicycle shops (provided by Healthy Shasta) - John at Turtle Bay and Karen at Shasta County
- • Trek Interchange Panniers and bicycle rack ($155 value provided by The Bike Shop) - Chris at Turtle Bay Exploration Park
- • Bontrager Grocery Bags ($50 value each, provided by The Bike Shop) - 2 winners! - Melinda at Shasta County and Allison at Shasta College
- • Bicycle tune-ups (provided by Village Cycle) - 2 winners! - Cliff at Shasta College and Melinda at The Rose Center Physical Therapy
- • Specialized bicycle helmet (Sierra or Align provided by Sports LTD) - 2 winners! - Tom at Shasta College and Chris at Bethel Church
- • 30-day YMCA membership (provided by Shasta Family YMCA) - Donnell at Shasta County
- • $35 gift certificate to Chain Gang Bike Shop (provided by Chain Gang) - 2 winners! - Terry at City of Redding Solid Waste and Rob at Sundial Pedicab
NorCal Bicycle Partnership
A group made up of various groups and individuals working toward developing a safe and complete network of bike ways that encourages bicycling for transportation and recreation for a diversity of users. Partnership includes Caltrans, City of Redding, City of Shasta Lake, Healthy Shasta, Redding Velo, Shasta Wheelmen, The McConnell Foundation, and the Trails and Bikeways Council. Most often a driving route is not the best biking route to work, school or to do errands. Use this map to find the best way to commute by bike in Redding. Map shows trails, short cuts, and routes indicating shoulders and traffic volume. Maps available May 2009 at area bike shops or by calling 245-6583.

Bike commuting is an effective and inexpensive way to get to work or school. It’s also fun and can reduce stress. Riding a bicycle keeps our air clean, saves money, gas, and wear and tare on your vehicle. Set a goal to ride to work or school a couple days a week.

Shasta County Bike Racks
Several bicycle racks are available for your use in Shasta County. Initially this started as a partnership between Healthy Shasta, City of Redding, Viva Downtown Redding. Gerlinger Steel & Supply designed the rack with design guidelines from Viva Downtown Redding's Design Committee.

Local Annual Rides
Shasta Wheelmen Jamboree »
An annual ride of mileage options of 100, 50, 25, or a 15 mile family friendly option. Sponsored by Shasta Wheelmen. Held the 1st Sunday in May.
Anderson River Park Century »
Ride starts at Anderson River Park and meanders into the mountains to the east. Distances of 100, 60, 40 or 25 miles. Sponsored by Enterprise Lions Club. Held the 3rd Saturday in May.
Shasta Lemurian Classic »
Local mountain bike race for over 20 years. Race the trails in Whiskeytown with three ride options: Short Course (8 miles), Intermediate Course (20 miles) and Long Course (26 miles). Held the last Saturday in April.
CycloCross Race Series »
CycloCross racing consists of many laps around a short (1.5-2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, hills, and obstacles. All levels of riders welcome. Races take place November - January.
